Top 5 Spring Break Activities in Destin
Destin, Okaloosa Island, and Fort Walton are great spots to visit during spring break. Take advantage of annual events like the Emerald Coast Volleyball Week, Kitty Hawk Kites Festival, and the Mattie Kelly Cultural Arts Village live concerts.
When: April 22 - 26
The Emerald Coast Volleyball Week takes place every April at The Boardwalk on Okaloosa Island. The four-day event brings together adults and kids to battle for prizes up to $1,000. Not a volleyball player? The tournament takes place all day and includes events like a costume contest and evening parties.
When: late April - late June (dates coming soon)
Live music takes over the Mattie Kelly Cultural Arts Village in Destin Thursday nights starting in April. Doors open at 6 pm and the show starts at 7 pm. Purchase tickets at the door for $15 per adult, and children under 12 are admitted for free. The lawn is open for picnics, and you can bring your own lawn chairs, blankets, small tables, beverages, and food. The concert series also has a fall run from mid September to mid October.
When: March - May
March is the unofficial start to the new fishing year. Cobia, king mackerel, jack crevalle, pompano, and more can be caught, especially later in the month. As the weather warms through April and into May, cobia and king mackerel becoming increasingly popular catches. It’s no wonder Destin has received the moniker of “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village.” There are plenty of ways to fish in the Destin and Okaloosa Island area, including bottom fishing, pier fishing, reef fishing, kite fishing, and more.
Kitty Hawk Kites Festival
When: two days in early April (dates coming soon)
The Kitty Hawk Kites Spring Kite Festival is a free event on Fort Walton Beach Boardwalk. Kites of all shapes, sizes, and colors take to the skies for the event hosted by Kitty Hawk Kites and the Emerald Coast Kite Fliers Club. The event includes professional stunt kite flying demonstrations, kite flying lessons, and large, intricate show kites. There is something for all ages.
Henderson Beach State Park
Henderson Beach State Park is more than 6,000 feet of protected Gulf of Mexico shoreline. The park is known for its sugar-white sand and is one of the last preserved stretches of coastal dune scrub. When some of the other area beaches can get crowded, Henderson Beach State Park is typically quiet and relaxing. The park features nature trails and areas for picnicking. Admission is $6 per vehicle or $2 for pedestrians and bicyclists.
